Oslo/Cairo, 05 May 2025: Scatec ASA has commenced construction of its 1.1 GW Obelisk solar and 100 MW/200 MWh battery storage project in Egypt.
[pdf] The African Development Bank, European Bank for Development and Reconstruction (EBRD), and British International Investment (BII) are investing $479.1 million to develop a major solar and battery storage facility in Egypt.
[pdf] The new policy focuses on three pillars: Grid Stabilization: Deploying lithium-ion batteries at 15 key substations to reduce blackouts. Solar+Storage Mandate: Requiring new commercial buildings to install PV panels with 8-hour storage capacity.
[pdf] In March 2025, Cairo’s subway system ditched diesel generators for a solar+storage microgrid: 2,500 Tesla Megapacks along Line 3 stations. Result: 40% lower energy costs and zero outage delays during sandstorms.
[pdf] The company began constructing a USD 150 million factory in Sokhna in December 2024 to produce N-type solar cells and module-cell-wafer systems, with an annual capacity of 2 GW. The 78,000-square-metre facility was supposed to start operations in September 2025.
[pdf] Mark your calendars for April 29-30, 2025 – the Solar Show MENA 2025 at Cairo’s Egypt International Exhibition Center is where renewable energy’s brightest minds will collide. Think of it as the "World Cup" of clean energy, but with fewer soccer balls and more cutting-edge battery tech.
